Venus Williams, still in search of her first career French Open singles title, moved a step closer to achieving that feat on Wednesday after dispatching Arantxa Parra Santonja in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on the clay courts at Roland Garros.
Venus wasn’t always sharp but she was never in serious trouble as she put 60 percent of her first serves in play and collected points on 74 percent of those offerings. She faced just three break points in the match and didn’t surrender a single one.
Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
